Year in Review 1999

The last year of this millennium-- 1999

January -- May: Another year on the high seas. Florida to the Bahamas, 6000 foot mountains, higher than the Appalachians, sitting on the ocean floor, lopped off at sea level. Devil's Island where we honeymooned years ago. Famous Nassau, then exploring infamous, shallow Schooner Cays -- beautiful deserted islets with only birds to keep us company.

June -- July: Eastward Ho! Against all winds. Happy people in Puerto Rico's San Juan. Boisterous Virgin Islands, dreaded Anegada Passage to French and Dutch St. Martin. Hauled Spaceship, replaced propeller shaft, rebuilt rudder gudgeons.

August -- September: Down the Leeward and Windward Islands, heading south to Trinidad for hurricane season, but stopped in St. Lucia (the island base in Caribbean Kiss) below hurricane alley.

October: The beautiful Grenadines between St. Vincent and Grenada.

November: St. Vincent's Bequia, hurricane season over? Took engine apart. Lenny, in the northern Caribbean, sent huge boarding swells to fill our cockpit and tear our dinghy loose. Got towed to deep water safer anchorage and watched large seas tear down stone and cement walls and wash beaches into people's yards.

December: Heading north for Christmas, we day-sail to Martinique and take the wind past Dominica and Guadeloupe. We pass just off the lava flows of the smoking Monteserrat volcano. On up to St. Kitts, Eustatia, St. Martin, and here we are in Antigua at Lord Jim's Locker and Nelson's Dockyard for Christmas and to celebrate the year 2000.

We on board SPACESHIP Earth hope that this past year you have sailed gentle seas and that you will reach into the next millennium with tillers turned to the islands of your dreams,

Edwin Paul & Wendy Cutler
